TRAINED GOOSE DOGS Nearly every Border Collie will chase geese, but few meet the specialized requirements for a career as a successful goose dog. What should a well trained goose dog be able to do? A well trained goose dog is the product careful selection followed by months of highly skilled training. Here are just a few of the basics. * A goose dog works at a distance from the handler, typically in unfenced areas. Solid, well-proofed obedience training is a must! * Like a sheepdog, a goose dog needs voice or whistle commands to direct it right, left, farther out -- wherever the geese are! * Beyond basic sheepdog training, a goose dog must be willing to swim out after the birds, and must take direction in the water. * Attitude is important! A goose dog must not be intimidated by angry or aggressive geese, and at the same time should seek to herd, not harm them. * More specialized skills for goose dogs include riding on golf carts, greeting the public appropriately, ignoring noise or livestock, and other needs peculiar to individual sites. |
